Billboard Crowns 'Daughtry' As Top Seller of 2007; Beyonce's 'Irreplaceable' Top Song

He may not have won "American Idol," but Chris Daughtry is the king of the album charts this year, according to Billboard. The "Idol" finalist's band, Daughtry, sold 3.2 million copies of their self-titled debut, making it the most popular album of the year, according to the trade magazine.

The group was followed by Akon, whose "Konvicted" sold 2.7 million; Fergie's "The Dutchess," which sold 2.4 million; the "Hannah Montana" soundtrack with 2.5 million copies sold; and 2005's "American Idol" champ Carrie Underwood, whose "Some Hearts" sold 2.3 million copies.

Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" was the No. 1 single of the year, followed by Rihanna's "Umbrella." Both have been nominated for a Grammy for record of the year. Rounding out the top five was Gwen Stefani at No. 3 with "The Sweet Escape," Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" at No. 4, and T-Pain's "Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin')" at No. 5.

The Police's reunion tour was named the top tour of the year, grossing at least $212 million.

As much as I don't like Daughtry this is good for the Idol Franchise. Carrie got this honor last year, so all is good.

You should listen to more of his music AIW - it's great stuff! It is good for the Idol franchise, I'd agree, but sort of makes the voters of American Idol look a bit silly :lol Taylor Hicks won that season - and Chris got the boot 4th...so now the public (not the AI voters) are really dictating who the real 'Idol' is with their $$.

Nah, I disagree. The AI contest is one thing. Commercial success afterwards is a whole new ballgame.

Otherwise we'd have to consider that Kellie Pickler was better than a lot of the other contestants! :eek

Well yes, I don't care for Kellie Pickler and actually I hated her on the show, but she is much better and much more tolerable now, in my opinion - especially her recent CMA performance. She does the country thing and I have never ever been a country fan, so I really can't be too critical, just not my genre.

You miss my point though Dennis - in my opinion American Idol is supposed to find the best undiscovered singer out there...the people that vote for American Idol, obviously aren't the ones that are buying albums - which is really is the bottom line. The franchise is probably still ticked off that Chris didn't get further, else they'd have a large cut of his $$.

Well, I agree with what you say...to a point. I think the type of album that the contestants are forced to put out makes a huge difference though too.

For instance, I loved Ruben. However, I don't feel that the album they produced with him was very good.

Daughtry had the benefit of just having an awesome album full of great songs! I'm glad though, because I'm a fan of his anyway and it's definitely my favorite album from an AI alum so far.
