Adam Lambert - American Idol Runner-Up Q & A
1. Do you think the talk about your sexual orientation had any impact on the voting?
You know, probably [laughs].
2. What would you say to fans who were really disappointed that you lost?
I know it sounds really cliche, but I really feel like I won by getting to the final. I felt like to me, it's not about the title of 'American Idol.' It was the experience. I made music, and I got to do a different performance every week, and I was able to use 'American Idol' as a platform to get myself out there, and now I have a career. So there's no need to dwell on the negative. We should look forward, and be excited about an album and the rest of my career.
3. So, you're OK with Kris winning?
I'm totally OK with it, and I couldn't be happier for Kris. He's a good friend of mine. I think he's immensely talented.
4. If you got an amazing offer to do Broadway right now, would you take it? Or are you focused on making an album?
I think my direction right now is to try to become a recording artist. I spent time doing the theater thing for a number of years. I'm not turning my back on it, but I'm definitely going in the other direction right now.
5. How do you feel about bringing theatricality back to rock?
First and foremost, it is about the music. But it kind of packages it in a little bit more of a flashy, more interesting, dynamic way, in my opinion, and I think theatricality is just one way of performing, and I don't think it's a better way or the way, but it's my way [laughs] ... David Bowie's a great example of somebody that did it. Michael Jackson's a good example of somebody that used theatricality and drama. Madonna ... I was just really lucky that 'American Idol' embraced it because I think that it was something a little bit new for them.
6. But what would you say to those people who criticized you for being too theatrical?
I never really listen to what people say [laughs]. My thing is: My favorite artists are artists that are theatrical. Obviously, when you are doing a recording, things aren't gonna translate as over the top ... I really enjoy the recording process and it's going to represent itself differently. Anybody that bought an iTunes version of what I did on the show could see "OK, I get how he sounds in a recorded session now versus how he is live." It's different. The live performance takes it to a different level, so I think people are in store for a treat. I think it's going to be a really cool album, and I'm excited to start working on it.
7. How much creative input did you really have? Did anybody ever try to hold you back?
Actually the really cool thing about the show is that they've been 100 percent supportive everything that I've done ... from the music to what I'm wearing to how I perform. I would go into a vocal session and be like, "I have this idea can we try it?" "Yeah, sure let's try it." Ricky Minor and the band would be like, "Well, what about this can we try this?" "Yeah, let's try it, man." It's been very positive and creative and never once for a second did I feel stifled in any way.
8. How did you make your fashion choices?
I have some friends here in L.A. that ended up wardrobing me for a couple of the different performances. They're called SkinGraft and the three designers that do that line are old friends of mine and they ended up doing the 'Ring of Fire' jacket, the jacket for 'We Are the Champions' the other night, the jacket for 'Whole lot of Love' -- a lot of the jackets that I wore. I think that we may collaborate in the future. They really get my style and I really love the way that their clothes look.
9. Did you ever think about giving up on your dream?
I've definitely had moments of that. And I think that's one of the reasons why I decided to audition for the show is that I got to a point where I was in the ensemble of 'Wicked' here in L.A., and it was a great job, and I had a lot of friends in the cast and it was paying the bills. But I just wasn't satisfied artistically. It was about a year and a half ago, and I was sitting alone in my room one day and I was like, "Is this it? Is this my life?" I had just turned 26, and I said, "I want more. There's more that I'm supposed to be doing. I have this feeling." So this was the thing that presented itself to me, and I think the timing was right. I hadn't auditioned before because I don't think I was ready, and everything just lined up and I'm really, really fortunate that it worked out the way it did.
10. What kind of album will you make?
We're kind of at the drawing board right now trying to figure that out. You know, my view of the record industry right now is it's a little too specific lately. The labels tend to try to put one box around every artist and keep them in one genre. To me, I'm so fortunate because I got to use the show to get myself out there and we don't have to go about it that way. You know, obviously we want the album to have a cohesive sound but I think it can be a collection of different styles with me at the center of it. Everybody knows who I am singing it, so that's the common thread.

Clay Aiken sounds off on `American Idol,' Lambert
Clay Aiken sounds off on `American Idol' and runner-up Adam Lambert
Clay Aiken is no fan of Adam Lambert.
The "American Idol" also-ran has blasted this season's runner-up on his Web site, mocking Lambert's rendition of "Ring of Fire" as "contrived," "awful" and "slightly frightening."
According to Aiken, he tunes into the show about once a season — and this year, he caught Lambert's take on Johnny Cash and thought his ears would bleed.
But wait — there's more. Aiken aims his vitriol on "Idol" itself. He thinks the series showed bias for Lambert over eventual champ Kris Allen and has focused on "slick productions and polished contestants" rather than raw talent.
Aiken lost out to Ruben Studdard in 2003. He's since released several albums, appeared on Broadway and publicly confirmed he's gay.

Good news for Lambert.
Queen star eyes 'Idol' loser Lambert
Rocker Adam Lambert has been given another boost after facing defeat on the season finale of American Idol - Queen guitarist Brian May wants to collaborate with him.
Lambert lost out to fellow finalist Kris Allen on last week's season finale in Los Angeles and has already been offered a guest spot by rocker Gene Simmons on the Kiss tour.
And May is echoing Simmons' sentiments, insisting a collaboration with the reality TV star is in order.
May tells Rolling Stone, "It's not like we, as Queen, would rush into coalescing with another singer just like that. It isn't that easy. But I'd certainly like to work with Adam. That is one amazing instrument he has there."

Adam Lambert: I'm 'proud of my sexuality'
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert confirmed publicly what he assumed everyone already knew: He is gay.
"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I am gay," Lambert told Rolling Stone magazine.
He said he is "proud of my sexuality" and never sought to hide it during the "Idol" competition.
"I embrace it," he said. "It's just another part of me."
Still, he stayed silent when, in March, a picture of him, dressed in drag and kissing an ex-boyfriend, emerged online.
Lambert told Rolling Stone he was worried coming out would "be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing."
The photo was taken on one of the three or four times he's dressed in drag, Lambert said, "but 'sucking my boy's face? Yes, that I will own.' "
He took down all of the pictures on his Facebook and MySpace pages before the "Idol" season, but he forgot about another Web site profile that included the drag photo, he said.
With the competition over, Lambert's public confirmation of his homosexuality is in preparation for the "American Idol" national tour, which starts next month.
He said he wanted to avoid "the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bulls--t."
"I find it very important to be in control of this situation," he said. "I feel like everyone has an opinion of me, and I want a chance to say, 'Well, do you want to hear how I really feel about all this?'"
Aiken, the runner-up on "Idol's" second season, dodged questions about his sexuality until coming out in People magazine last year.
Lambert said his coming out is not a political statement.
"I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader," he said.
The Rolling Stone article revealed some "bi-curious" ambiguity for Lambert, whose tall, dark and handsome looks appealed to the female audience.
"I loved it this season when girls went crazy for me," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, it's all hot."
He said he is "kind of interested" in girls.
Lambert made another revelation to Rolling Stone that might not be expected.
His decision to audition for "American Idol" came after a week at Burning Man -- an annual festival held in a Nevada desert -- where he experimented with "certain funguses."
"I had a psychedelic experience where I looked up at the clouds and went, 'Oh!' " he said. "I realized that we all have our own power, and that whatever I wanted to do, I had to make happen."
And what he wanted to do was be on "American Idol," he said.
"I knew it was my only shot to be taken seriously in the recording industry, because it's fast and broad."

Clay Aiken is wack.Who cares what he think of Adam.He is jealous.Adam is a great singiner and should have won. When he sang with Kiss that was the only time I liked the group.Loved it when he sange with Kris "We are the Cham[pions."He has quiet a set of pipes on him.I would buy his cd over Clays any day of the week.Or Kris's.

I'm always of the mindset that everyone has the right to be who they are, and not be judged for it. We should live in a society where being open and honest about our feelings or ideas should be embraced, rather than frowned upon. If Adam Lambert wasn't liked because of the way he sang, that's fine. Not to like him because he's gay is definitely NOT fine. We should all be comfortable in our own skin, and be able to express that. Personally, I respect someone who is proud of who they are, and says so. Adam was on AI to express how he feels about music through singing, not gender preference. Unfortunately, it's so hard to have the press behind you digging up every piece of information that would make what they thought would be a good read. Behind every "label" is a person who has feelings. It's a pity everyone can't respect that.

The cover art has been released for "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert's debut album, hitting stores on November 24th.
Adam's cover art for "For Your Entertainment" definitely skews more in line with Allison Iraheta's album than it does with Kris Allen's album, which makes sense as their music styles are far similar. It also reminds us more than a little of David Bowie's "Aladdin Sane" album cover.

It's so Adam. I'm so excited that he's out there living his dream. The reviews have been terrific for the album so far. I can't wait!
Very Bowie-esque, but a little more airbrushing than I prefer. Still, I can't wait to hear what he's going to do. I'm a little worried because one review I read said if you like Time for Miracles you won't like the album, and I DO like Time for Miracles.

I like some of Adam's stuff on America Idol, but honestly, this cover, not going to have me running out to buy his album.
Not to be rude or anything, but it reminds me more of a ANTM shoot - he could be a she? He's certainly got excellent bone structure.

I heard that too, but it was described as Time For Miracles is like A Change Is Gonna Come and One, as opposed to his album being similar to Play That Funky Music and Born To Be Wild. Sort of his two sides on Idol. And I love both of them

Yep - heard it on the AMA's last night and well, not a fan.
That whole act/scene was too much for me. Maybe I'm a bit of a conservative, but I honestly don't know how broadcast television got away with airing that last night. I didn't care for Adam's singing and I think the whole act was in very poor taste and bordering very closely on the offensive.

Yet not a peep about Janet groping one of her male dancers (Not from you I meant the media :lol )
I agree it was a little too much (and more than Janet's 2 second grope)
Besides being raunchy the perfromance just plain sucked!

Well in response, I'd say that I was offended by the whole Janet Jackson superbowl nonsense and I believe it was no mistake. Completely offended on that one for sure. I also wasn't really pleased when Madonna and Brittany took to the stage making out.
I just think there are things that should and shouldn't be aired on network programming. If you pay to see a show in person - you should know what you're going to see, so whatever these performers want to do is what it is. If you watch HBO or another channel that warns that content will be R rated, then ok, I know what I'm going to see.
Adam crossed the line and of late I've heard that because of his stage performance, which he claimed much was 'impromptu', they edited out portions for West Coast viewers...which was appropriate I think. He's also been canceled from appearing on Good Morning America Wednesday morning...I guess they don't trust that he will provide content that is acceptable to the early morning viewers.
As far as Janet groping one of her male dancers - sorry didn't see her act :shrug It wouldn't surprise me though because well as I said before the whole Superbowl thing had me a little disgusted with her in the first place, plus I don't care for her music. Not to take up for the media, but if they didn't pick up on it, it's likely because it's something they too expect from her, she does have a track record. This was Adam's first major performance since the release of his album and whether it was good or bad, I think it was going to get attention. IMHO he sounded awful and his 'show' was horrible and offensive.
Bottom line is that I don't think sexually charged performances (whether hetrosexual or homosexual in nature) and the like are not acceptable for broadcast television in general. I don't particularly like watching it, but more importantly I don't think that kids should be subjected to it.
I was very disappointed in the AMA performance. Even putting the risque stuff aside - which wasn't my cup of tea personally - he just wasn't in good voice. THAT'S what I love about him - not that he's glam or gay or outrageous. FYE isn't my favorite song on the album - there are several that I like but on too many his amazing voice is completely lost in the "wah wah electronic whooshy" (my non-technical term, LOL) effects. Still you can hear it come through on Soaked and a couple of others, and those are the ones that give me chills. The AMA performance, though, gave me more "eww" than anything else. Gotta give him props for continuing to sing after taking a tumble, though - I actually thought it was part of the act!

Adam Lambert: "I'm Not A Babysitter. I'm A Performer."
Wednesday, November 25, 2009
The backlash from Adam Lambert's performance at last Sunday's American Music Awards is still on, and the American Idol runner-up isn't giving any apologies. But, in an interview with CBS' The Early Show, Adam admitted that he was carried away with his sexually-charged performance, which featured dancers in bondage, simulated oral sex, and the performer kissing a male keyboard player.
"I admit I did get carried away, but I don't see anything wrong with it," he said. "I do see how people got offended and that was not my intention. My intention was to interpret the lyrics of my song and have a good time with it."
He added that the more risque elements of his performance were not rehearsed, and vowed to clear these issues before staging future performances. However, he hinted at possible discrimination from networks and viewers, noting that in the same night, Lady Gaga, Eminem and Janet Jackson had similar elements in their numbers but weren't chided for it.
"If it had been a female pop performer doing my moves that were on the stage, I don't think there would be nearly as much of an outrage," he said. "I think it's because I'm a gay male."
He declined to give an apology on the show, adding that he did not consider the possibility of having many children watch the performance. His number, after all, can at nearly 11pm, closing the night's events. "I'm not a babysitter," he said. "I'm a performer."
Nonetheless, the controversy surrounding the performance undeniably helped push sales of his just-released record For Your Entertainment. Estimates suggest that the album should sell at least 225,000 copies when it debuts on next week's Billboard chart, which is in the same ballpark as first-week sales for Idol winner David Cook's first album.
As for last season's actual winner, Kris Allen, he shifted only 80,000 copies in his first week, and debuts at number 11 on the SoundScan charts, behind Justin Bieber and Norah Jones. As they say, any publicity is still good publicity.

They also asked him if, in retrospect, he would have done anything differently, and he said, "Well, I would have sung it better." That cracked me up.

Susan Boyle's debut album drops at No. 1, Adam Lambert at No. 3
By Christopher Rocchio, 12/02/2009
Adam Lambert and Susan Boyle both scored big first-week sales with their debut albums.
The American Idol eighth-season runner-up's debut album "For Your Entertainment" dropped at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 U.S. album sales chart after selling 198,000 copies during its initial week of release, while the Britain's Got Talent runner-up's debut album "I Dream a Dream" dropped at No. 1 after selling 701,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen Soundscan data for the week ending November 29.
Boyle's debut represents the best sales week for an album in the U.S. this year and also posted the best first-week sales since AC/DC's "Black Ice" moved 784,000 in its first week of release in October 2008, according to Billboard.
In addition, Boyle's debut reportedly beat Ashanti's 2002 self-titled debut as the best opening week for a female artist since Soundscan began tracking sales in 1991, while only one other album has had a bigger debut sales week in Soundscan's tracking history -- as Snoop Dog's "Doggystyle" moved 803,000 in its first week in 1993.
Lambert more than double the first-week sales of Kris Allen, as the American Idol eighth-season champ's debut album dropped last week at No. 11 on The Billboard 200 album sales chart after selling only 80,000 copies during its initial week of release.
Lambert's first-week debut album sales are the best for an Idol runner-up since fourth-season runner-up Bo Bice, whose "The Real Thing" moved 227,000 copies in its first week in December 2005 and debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200. Clay Aiken's October 2003 debut "Measure of a Man" remains the highest-selling Idol runner-up debut ever. It moved 613,000 copies and dropped at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.
Lambert signed a recording contract with 19 Recordings/RCA Records a few weeks after Idol's eighth-season finale. His recording contract was announced on the same day he formally revealed he's gay in a Rolling Stone cover story interview.
Last week, Lambert caused controversy with an S&M-themed performance of his debut single "For Your Entertainment" at the end of ABC's live broadcast of the American Music Awards ceremony.
Sandwiched between Boyle and Lambert on The Billboard 200 was Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas," which sold 218,000 copies.
Rounding out the Top 10 on the album sales chart were Rihanna's "Rated R" (181,000), Lady Gaga's "The Fame Monster" (174,000) and "The Fame" (151,000), Miley Cyrus' "The Time Of Our Lives" (150,000), Taylor Swift's "Fearless" (125,000), Carrie Underwood's "Play On" (124,000), and Norah Jones' "The Fall" (110,000).
