I'm sure the irony was intentional. I think that poking fun at your past will definitely help you create a connection with the audience.
As for Gilles, its clear he can do anything Cheryl asks him to, so she has him doing solos all over the place, but it sounds like the judges want her to pull back and get a little less showy. I think that might be a good idea.
