Dispatches From the Gender War Front: Episode 10 - Troyzan's Island - Now Managed and Administered by Kim ![]() I've been endlessly complaining that nobody was doing what they needed to challenge Kim and Co for supremacy in this game. Finally somebody did. Did it work? No, not at all. But that's because only one person figured it out. The rest are complacent and have yet to realize they're coming in 4th, 5th, 6th... or maybe they just don't care that much. Whatever. I'm happy that Troy finally tried to make some moves. This might be Troy's Island (according to him) but he needs to realize that no man is an island and he needs the help of some of the others to get where he wants to go. Probably, he could have freaked out a little less when he won Immunity. A little more calm might have helped him. In all likelihood it wouldn't have though. These people aren't going to go out of the way to improve their standing in the game. Seriously, what is Christina thinking? ![]() Even though he didn't flip the game like he had hoped, I admired the fight that Troyzan put in. He made sure he bought the advantage at the auction. He searched for an idol and though he didn't find it, he has people guessing whether or not he does. He won Immunity. Finally he identified and talked to each of the people who are not in the power alliances inner circle, giving a very good argument on why they should change things up. Too little too late I guess, but at least he did what he could. I can't really even fault him for acting like a dick when he won Immunity. Its not like Sabrina and Chelsea are going to suddenly switch their loyalty to him because he's such a nice guy. They just want him to go out quietly and not make their inevitable march to victory unpleasant. They want him to lose "like a man" , like Jonas. Well, Jonas was a nice guy, but a pathetic player. If you can't win, at least you might as well not make it easy for them. ![]() I do have to give tons of credit to Kim though. She is almost unique amongst this cast in that she seems to be able to play without emotion (well Christina doesn't seem to let emotion into it too much either, but she's not actually playing, she's just hanging out). I like how Kim is completely on top of things but she doesn't get cocky. She doesn't worry about Troy's freakouts, but she does worry a little about the tricks he may have up his sleeve. She doesn't count her competitors out, she stays watchful, she keeps things low key and she doesn't panic. I'm not ready to call her one of the greatest players ever since a lot of her success is due to severe idiocy on the part of this season's male cast. But I do think there's a lot to like about her game. ![]() No DIY reward challenge this week, instead we had the ever popular Survivor auction. Sometime this is used to tip people off as to who is in whose alliance. Sometimes its to stir up resentment. Sometimes it so we can laugh when people buy dirty water and sea cucumber stomachs or chicken livers covered in sand. This time its mostly to give someone (Troy) a chance to buy an advantage in the Immunity challenge and also to give people an opportunity to buy letters from home. There's the usual food items as well, of course. There's a shower also. I think its kind of dumb to bid on that because you can always wash in the ocean - sure you're not zestfully clean, but you're not that bad. This time though, Kim gets it for a mere 40 bucks, so that's really not a bad deal at all. She also got a disgusting big bowl of peanut butter and chocolate so she did alright. Alicia blew all her 500 bucks on a letter from her dad, who she said had never written her a letter before. And you could tell. It was the most boring, impersonal letter I've ever heard. It was like it was written by a rather unsophisticated piece of letter-generating software. Not worth the 5 Benjamins in my book. Then Tarzan who supposedly was saving his money for new shocks for his jeep buys a letter for 500 as well. The guy is a doctor and he cant afford to fix his jeep? Has he got a lot of money tied up in malpractice litigation? The guy is a weirdo and a phony. He doesn't share his letter, probably because it was written by his cat or something. Finally the advantage comes up for sale. If I was Troyzan I would have bid $500 right away, but he doesn't. I guess maybe he has car repairs he's saving for as well? Christina has enough money to steal it away from him by bidding $500, but she doesn't. Instead they bid up in increments with Christina dropping out when Troy bids $420. I'm not sure how that makes sense at all. But Troy recieves an $80 discount so he can get a Spring tuneup and Christina takes home all her money. I think she might have lost a finger though when everyone ravenously tore into the cake that Kat bought to signal the end of the auction. ![]() The $420 that Troy paid was money well spent since he wins immunity. So he can take the rest of the afternoon to try and convince people to vote Kim out and also remind everyone that it's his island and that he won immunity, etc, etc. The fact that its all Troy even though he's not actually in imminent danger speaks volumes about the guy who is - Leif. He's in the ocean getting his blue face paint washed off by Tarzan. All they can say is the its going to be one of them getting voted out. They're just accepting of it. They're not scrambling or talking to anyone or bargaining. Tarzan, being the most insane person left, I guess has reason to suspect it won't be him getting the axe. But Leif can't rely on insanity to move him further in the game. He's just plain normal. And frustratingly lethargic when it comes to the game. He never saw an opportunity he wished to grab. He was always content to have someone else tell him what to do. I guess he just wasn't that kind of player. I think, when Colton yelled at him for speaking frankly with Bill, he should have reacted then and there and turned the game around. Instead he figured 'as long as its not me...'. It took a while but that attitude killed him. I liked the guy. Nice guy. I loved that nobody, with the exception of hateful flameout Colton, ever made anything of his stature. His size was left completely unexploited which was classy. But his gameplay just wasn't there. I'm sure Chelsea loved how he played the game. He went out like a man. But no one, including Leif himself, is going to say it was Leif's island. ![]() I'll bid $5 for an email! If only I hadn't paid $495 for that glass of ketchup and a spoon ![]() kungfuhippie@tvfunspot.com For More Survivor: One World Island News visit: SirLinksalot: Survivor: One World |
