Marvel is making good on its promise to release The First Avenger: Captain America on May 6, 2011. The studio just signed director Joe Johnston (Hidalgo) to helm the project. Johnston, the director of Universal's 2009 film The Wolfman, will be charged with transforming Steve Rogers from an unfit military man into a super-powered crime fighter.
It won't be new territory for the Texan director. He was formerly a visual effects director who won an Academy Award for his work on Raiders of the Lost Ark. No word yet on who Marvel is intending to cast as Captain America but they better get on it soon: Marvel will have its superhero-coalition movie The Avengers in production simultaneously and will need its Captain America for a crucial appearance. The two movies are scheduled to bow two months apart in Summer 2011, which ought to prove a good season to be a comic book fan.
